What the test shows.
The bar shows your microphone volume in real time. You will notice whether your microphone delivers a signal at all and how loud you come across at a normal speaking volume.
How the measurement works.
Your browser reads the microphone signal through the Web Audio API and calculates the volume right on your device. No recording and no file is created. Your microphone signal never leaves the browser.
What the test cannot do.
This test does not replace Hallig's own permission check. On macOS you still need to allow microphone access for your browser once, in System Settings, independent of this page.
How to fix it.
- Check whether your browser has blocked microphone access for this page. Click the lock or site icon in the address bar and set the permission to Allow.
- On Mac, open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone, and allow your browser access. On iPhone or iPad, the same setting is under Settings, Safari, Camera & Microphone.
- If several microphones are connected, your browser sometimes picks the wrong one. Open the device list in the test and choose your input device by hand.
- Some apps hold the microphone exclusively while they run, for example a video call in the background. Close such apps or restart your browser and try again.

- Speak at a normal volume.
- Read the level on the bar and stop the test.

Why do I not see a level?
Your browser probably has no microphone access, or the wrong input device is selected. Check the permission in your browser and system, then pick your microphone from the list.
Does the page record audio?
No. The level is calculated right in your browser. Your audio never leaves the browser, and nothing is recorded.
Which microphone does my device use?
Without a choice, your browser usually uses your device's built-in microphone. If you connect an external microphone or headset, you can pick it from the device list in the test.
Why does the level move around?
The level follows your speaking volume and the sound around you directly. Normal speech, pauses, and background noise make the bar move up and down.
